UPDATE:
The new window is SO easy to open, and the screen will go either on top or bottom, whichever place I want it. Top is great to keep a cat from tearing it. I love that i can open the window at the top, and cat will not be able to escape. The sliding glass door looks beautiful and the workers really had to individualize it due to the odd shape of the door opening which wasn't standard. They accommodated it with lumber and made sure it looked completely normal. No one would know.
